These new builds near Kanata are not your mom’s bungalow
What do you think of when you picture a bungalow?
The stereotypical narrow hallways, tight corners, and tiny bedroom windows of 1970’s bungalows. After all, Ottawa is full of these builds and to many of us, they were our childhood homes.
However, bungalows also bring back memories of spending time together with family, being called to dinner from the kitchen, and hearing laughter resonate through a cozy space.
When we set out to design a modern bungalow fit for new construction near Kanata, we wanted to preserve the spirit of togetherness while doing away with the dusty 70’s stereotypes.
Here are three examples of things we kept – and things we did away with – when designing our five bungalow models for today’s tastes and lifestyles.
3 great things about bungalows that need no improvement
➜ Living on one level brings the family together
One of the best things about bungalows is that everyone is on the same level – literally.
When we set out to design the modern bungalow, we felt that the bungalow concept has value, now more than ever. Many parents tell us that they want a space where they can connect more with their kids, rather than have everyone retreat to their own bedrooms upstairs. By designing a floorplan that puts everyone close together in a comfortable way, we’ve recreated the togetherness of the traditional family bungalow.
➜ Decorating an open concept bungalow is a pleasure like no other
This doesn’t get said enough, but it is so easy to decorate a well-designed open concept space that flows naturally from room to room. Without the challenge of having small spaces separated by staircases, you’ll find that sightlines, focal points, and function areas come together as if you’re a professional designer. All you need is an imagination and a Pinterest board!
➜ A smaller home may mean more funds left over for gorgeous details – or vacations!
Bungalows were always the affordable family home, and we think they should stay that way. Our bungalow models are the most affordable in our range, and they are not lacking in luxury finishes or attention to detail. By being more efficient with the space design, you are able to create a home that leaves some room in the budget.
3 improvements we made to modernize the traditional bungalow
➜ The first thing you’re going to notice is the ceilings.
What’s the difference between a 1970’s bungalow and a modern bungalow? The modern one feels much bigger! And that’s not always a matter of square footage. A tall or vaulted ceiling gives the dramatic gasp-factor without adding to the footprint. Imagine introducing design elements into such an expansive space. A dramatic light fixture, a generous sectional, or a unique rug? There’s room here to make a statement!
➜ The entryway is where the magic happens.
When designing a home, one of the most important things for us is to create that “I’m home” moment. Stepping into a space that is warm and regenerating, feeling like you can finally exhale and leave the world behind. That moment of entering a personal sanctuary happens in the entryway.
We’ve dedicated lots of room in our floorplans to this space, where your family and guests can easily shed their outdoor clothes and outside worries before stepping into your home.
➜ Getting away from it all in the primary suite.
Ironically, the benefit of the classic bungalow is also its drawback – too much togetherness and not enough privacy. For our bungalows, we made sure the primary suite is an oasis of quiet, completely removed from the rest of the home’s busy activity. That’s why we included a walk-in closet and a 4-piece bathroom in each one of our floorplans. After working and taking care of the family all day, you deserve a spa moment.
